Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 98

2003 Maserati 4200 GT

Chassis No - ZAMBC000008913

Registration - BF52 RLO

M.O.T - September 2021

Odometer – 53,000

This lovely-looking right-hand drive coupe was supplied new by Evans Halshaw, Birmingham and registered to the first of its six keepers on January 3, 2003. It is resplendent in Blu Nettuno (ie Neptune Blue – why do names always sound better in Italian!) that’s paired with Avorio (ivory) hide interior trim. The Maserati appears to be in excellent order throughout, and is one of the rare examples fitted with six-speed manual transmission, of which just 1,078 were apparently produced. It comes with stacks of service invoices relating to work initially carried out by the supplying dealer and then by marque specialists such as McGrath Maserati and SB Race Engineering - the most recent bout of maintenance was performed in July 2020 by Autoshield Maserati. Also contained within the car’s history file are further items of paperwork and a selection of old MOT certificates, plus one current until September 30 this year. The total recorded mileage presently stands at a very acceptable 53,000 and, as the vendor rightly says about the 385bhp V8-engined 4200 GT, ‘it must be one of the best sounding cars out there’.

The 4200 GT was the first Maserati to be produced following the company’s takeover by Ferrari. Though a direct development of the Giugiaro-penned 3200 GT, it benefited from having Ferrari’s then new normally-aspirated F136 V8 engine in place of the 3200 GT’s complex bi-turbo unit. The powerplant was coupled to a six-speed gearbox with either manual or automated Cambiocorsa paddle shift. The suspension was by light-alloy double-wishbones all-round, to which customers had the option of adding an adaptive damping system called ‘Skyhook’. Braking was by Brembo four-pot calipers operating on large cross-drilled, ventilated discs.

In summary:

  • A very smartly presented example of Italian exotica
  • One of only 1,078 equipped with manual transmission
  • Comprehensive history file
