The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 98

1931 Morris Minor OHC
Fitted with the desirable over-head cam engine

Registration - SV 8134

Chassis No. - M33032

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This charming survivor of a now rare breed features a pleasing combination of black over grey bodywork teamed with maroon-coloured interior trim. It is powered by the desirable SOHC engine rather than the cheaper side-valve alternative that was an option from 1931 onwards. The vendor believes ‘SV 8134’ was the subject of a restoration in the early ‘80s and currently describes the car as ‘sound but not in show condition, and so perfectly usable as it is or the basis of a great project for its next keeper’. Whatever, he volunteers that the headlining would now benefit from replacement and that the driver’s door has dropped a touch. In summary he presently classes the Minor’s engine, three-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘average’ order. An attractive alternative to the ubiquitous Austin Seven.

The pre-war Minor was launched specifically to compete with the aforementioned Austin Seven and was assembled at Morris’s Cowley plant from 1929 until 1934, at which time it was replaced by the Morris Eight. The newcomer was ultimately offered in seven guises – five on the standard short wheelbase chassis (6’ 6”) and two on an extended platform (7’ 7”). Two engine types were employed. The more technically-advanced 847cc OHC unit designed by Wolseley was fitted to all examples made up to January 1931, at which point an equivalent capacity 19bhp side-valve unit was introduced alongside the original to create a model to sell for the magic £100. A three-speed gearbox was employed until 1933. Suspension was by semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and braking by cable-operated drums all round. The Minor’s most successful year was 1932, during which no less than 19,248 of the eventual 86,318 were built. It was, however, still outsold by the Austin Seven, the production of which continued in one form or another until 1939.

In summary:

  • Believed to have been restored in the early ‘80s
  • Equipped with the desirable OHC engine
  • Considered to be an ideal contender for VSCC driving tests
