Fans of classic American metal can do a lot worse than binge watch the full seven series of US drama Mad Men. The impeccably staged series has lead character, Don Draper played by Jon Hamm, driving two versions of the uber-stylish Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Initially this was a Series II 1962 model in blue, but by season five, Draper was driving a 1965 Series III model in silver. ‘DEY 548C’ offered here is indeed the later car from the hugely popular multiple Emmy award winning series. Bought by the current owner in 2016 following the completion of the series the year before, ‘DEY 548C’ was first registered in the UK in June of that year. Don Draper’s Cadillac is offered here from a two year period of storage and boasting an impressive overall condition. The Coupe de Ville is registered by DVLA as an Historic Vehicle. As such it is deemed MOT exempt and zero rated for road tax in the UK. Complete with the appropriate authenticity and provenance paperwork, ‘DEY 548C’ also comes with some UK service and maintenance history. With Mad Men being such a long running (92 episodes) and phenomenally popular series worldwide, ‘DEY 548C’ is bound to enjoy a level of recognition and, hence, desirability way in excess of other equivalent models.
The Series III Coupe de Ville launched in 1965 featuring much more angular design features and a significantly bigger footprint than its predecessor. For those of a certain age, brought up on 1960’s American TV shows, ‘DEY 548C’ will likely represent and architype of US cars of the period. The coupe cabin is sandwiched between almost impossibly expansive front and rear decks lending this Coupe de Ville unmatched road presence and drama. Those stunning period features extend to rear half spats as well as rear fins which are mirrored by the elongated front wings. These terminate in two pairs of stacked headlights either side of an imposing V-shaped grill. The grey and black finished interior looks enormous by modest European standards. Given this car’s leading role in a 1965 set drama, its originality overall can’t be faulted.
‘DEY 548C’ retains its factory mechanical specification which consists of the 429 cu in (7-litre), OHV V8 mated to a three speed TH-400 Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission. This gives ‘DEY 548C’ the bass rumble and ultimate waftability that was so desirable of the big, luxury coupes of the day. The mechanical systems of ‘DEY 548C’ are all rated as “good.”
