An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 78

1987 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooler Saloon
Rare factory Manual *** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - E88 SWX

Chassis No. - YV1764862J0045103

M.O.T. - March 2024

Odometer - 93,412

The Turbo on offer is not only one of few remaining, but possibly unique in its specification, as it was ordered new by Lex Brooklands of Leeds and then equipped by them with full Volvo bodykit, large boot spoiler, suspension lowering kit and multi-spoke alloy wheels. It was first registered in February 1988 and delivered to its first private keepers, a firm of Leeds-based barristers, the following July. The vendor informs us that they retained the car until March 1991, which is when he acquired the Volvo, at which point the odometer was reading 56,000 miles. Now registering a total of 93,421 miles, the Turbo would seem to be a remarkably original example, which we understand has never been resprayed, has always been garaged and even retains its original registration number, E88 SWX, and related Lex Brooklands registration plates. The vendor currently regards the turbo engine, four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox, four-door bodywork, black paintwork and luxurious black leather upholstery as all being in ‘good order’. He is now selling the car complete with its original Volvo sound system (that includes a graphic equaliser) and a current MOT certificate valid into March next year. The lot also includes a new exhaust manifold gasket, as the existing one apparently has a slight leak.

It’s true to say that pre-launch views of the basic V6-engined 760 were less than flattering, but opinions quickly changed when the leading motoring magazines of the day had test cars to sample – the general agreement was that, though the design was less than beautiful, the handling, performance and durability were exemplary. However, it was the later four-cylinder 760 Turbo that really put the model on the map, with its 0-60mph time of under eight seconds and top speed of 140mph. Good 760s are now keenly sought, but supplies are limited - according to the ‘How Many Left’ website, the sale car is one of just thirteen 760 Turbos still licensed for UK roads.

In summary:

  • A remarkably original two-owner example
  • Equipped with a unique set of dealer-fitted extras from new
  • Powered by the desirable four-cylinder B230ET turbo engine
