The Bolesworth Castle May 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 79

1972 Datsun 1500 Pickup
Very rare and seemingly original Japanese retro load-lugger

Registration - PGF 419K

Chassis No. - 704334

M.O.T.- TBC

Odometer - 665km

This rare and retro-looking Datsun pickup is a true survivor. A south African import, it came to the UK 18 months ago when it received both a UK V5 and a 1972 registration plate. The vendor says it came here already in very good condition, only requiring a detail once shipping was complete. They report the body is 'solid' and the engine is 'good', while the bed is also 'solid' and has seen only 'limited' hard commercial work. It is supplied in original and unrestored condition. The mileage displayed on the odometer is very low, but this is likely because of a change of speedometer at some point, although this isn’t confirmed. The brown interior complements the blue paintwork, and is brilliantly original for those who celebrate all things retro.

The Datsun pick-up is a long-running model line that went through numerous generations as Nissan looked to keep its affordable working vehicle competitive. This 520 generation was introduced in 1965 – interestingly, the 420 generation was skipped because, in Japanese, the name is considered impolite. This car is actually a later facelifted version, known as 521, and fitted with a larger 1.5-litre engine instead of the original 1.3-litre. With the name ‘DATSUN’ stamped into the rear deck tailgate, this reliable and long-running machine helped popularised the Japanese brand the world over.
