The well-loved Bedford TJ truck was introduced in 1958. It was the final ‘bonneted truck’ from Bedford, with the subsequent 1969 Bedford CF boasting the more space-efficient forward control layout that was becoming commonplace. The characterful Bedford still carried on being offered in the UK for another six years though – and even following its withdrawal here, it continued to be offered for export. The final cars were not produced until 1998, to meet an order from Kenya. Lancastrians are particularly familiar with the Bedford TJ, as local food company Holland’s Pies used them well into the 1980s – the Bedford was colloquially known as a ‘Holland’s pie van’ there.
