The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 133

1990 Lotus Elan SE Turbo
Only 56,000 miles from new

Registration - G209 MUX

Chassis No. - SCC100ZT1LHD16126

M.O.T. - September 2023

Odometer - 56,000

M100 Elans can quickly deteriorate if not treated with due respect, so full marks to those that have had a hand in the history of this pretty example, for which VDI Check lists a total of 11 keepers, but which is nevertheless believed to have travelled no more than 56,010 miles to date. Its red bodywork is matched to a red and black leather interior and black hood, while it rides on seemingly unmarked period-correct alloy wheels shod with quality Avon tyres. The vendor presently considers the turbo engine, five-speed manual transmission and two-seater bodywork to all be in ‘excellent’ condition and classes the paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. He is now seeking a new owner for the little Lotus, and offering it complete with Kenwood radio/CD player and an A4 folder full of history confirming regular maintenance, plus a current MOT certificate valid to September 15.

Being a small, fibreglass-bodied two-seater constructed over a rigid steel chassis, the M100 certainly conformed to the general philosophy of Lotus’s late founder, Colin Chapman. The major departure was the use of frontwheel drive – a configuration not employed by Lotus before or since. At launch, the pretty newcomer was described by Autocar as ‘the quickest point to point car available’. The newcomer was powered by a Lotus-modified 1,588 DOHC Isuzu unit. Most customers opted for the SE model that featured a 162bhp turbocharged version of the engine and power steering as standard. Autocar’s test of the SE achieved an impressive 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and top speed of 137mph. By the time production of the Elan ceased in 1992 some 3,855 examples had been delivered from the Hethel factory.

In summary:

  • A pretty example thought to have travelled just 56,010 miles
  • Comes with excellent service history and current MOT
  • Equipped with quality tyres and a Kenwood CD/radio
