The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 127

1979 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II

Registration - GHE 872V

Chassis No. - SRH38935

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 41,241

Finished in white and trimmed in sumptuous deep red leather, this handsome Shadow II is guaranteed to cause a stir wherever it goes, and clearly has a bright future either as a classic for general enjoyment or a wedding car; a role for which it is clearly ideal. A seven-keeper example, it was apparently fully restored around three years ago, since when the brakes, carburettors and fuel and exhaust systems have all received further attention, and are now fully sorted. The car has been dry stored since the work was completed and is now seeking a new home. Its last MOT expired as recently as February this year and had been advisory-free. The vendor currently regards the V8 engine, automatic transmission, bodywork, paintwork, brightwork and upholstery as all being in ‘good’ condition. The odometer currently registers a very modest total of 41,241 miles, and ‘GHE 872V comes complete with a good sized history file.

“Rolls-Royce says the Shadow II took eight years to develop. Their time was not wasted. Inevitably, there are areas in which the Shadow is surpassed by other cars. But there is no other car in the world that combines all its qualities.” Motor Magazine, 1977

Though shorter and narrower than the Silver Cloud III it replaced, the John Polwhele Blatchley-penned Shadow nevertheless possessed greater space for both luggage and passengers, and certainly boasted far more modern looks. The combination of changes introduced in 1977 was sufficient for Rolls-Royce to dub the new model ‘Shadow II’. The upgrades included: a switch from recirculating ball to rack-and-pinion steering, revised front end suspension geometry, and a change of carburettors, exhaust and cooling fans, all aimed at improving fuel consumption. More visible alterations included the rubber-tipped bumpers, a deeper radiator shell, and different door handles with more deeply recessed buttons. Still more evident was the bib spoiler below the front bumper and new style (spring-back) door mirror that was adjustable from inside the car.

In summary:

  • Well-presented and ideal as a general classic or wedding car
  • The subject of a full restoration around three years ago
  • Comes complete with good-sized history file
