The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 121

1984 Ferrari 308 GTS QV

Registration - A983 YCY

Chassis No. - ZFFUA13A9E0052051

M.O.T. - July 2024

Odometer - 48,700

The mere sight of a Rosso Red 308 is sufficient to raise the blood pressure a notch or two, it being one of so many memorable designs to wear the famous Prancing Horse badge. This particular lefthand drive GTS example is an American import that was first UK registered in May 2019, since when ‘A983 YCY’ had had three keepers, the most recent of whom acquired the car in November 2021. He informs us that a considerable degree of time and money has been invested in it in recent times, during which the timing belts, water pump, clutch and front suspension bushes have all been renewed and the flywheel resurfaced. The tan-coloured seats have been reupholstered in correct Ferrari leather and the trim surrounding the rear window renewed. The vendor now classes the V8 engine, five-speed manual gearbox, two-seater bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’, and the paintwork as ‘average’, and is now selling the Ferrari complete with history file containing a selection of invoices and receipts, and plans to add a full year’s worth of MOT by the time of the sale. The 308 was designated a Category S (structural) insurance write-off in 2021 as a result of damage to the nose cone, but the vendor assures us that it was ‘fully repaired to a very high standard’, so is no longer an issue.

The 308 GTB was Ferrari’s replacement for the immortal Dino 246 GT, and made its debut at the 1975 Paris Salon. Its shapely contours were the work of Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, who had already penned such eternal classics as the Daytona, Dino and Berlinetta Boxer. In 1980, the carburetted engine was replaced by a Bosch fuel-injected version in the name of reduced emissions. However, the change left the revised unit short of power, which Ferrari addressed in 1983 with the Quattrovalvole (four valve) variant, that simultaneously restored the output to 237bhp and the model’s reputation. Made famous by the TV series Magnum PI, the 308 has matured into a collectors’ favourite, with the 308 GTB QV (Berlinetta) and 308 GTS QV (Targa Top) models becoming the most sought after.

In summary:

  • A lefthand drive American import first UK registered in May 2019
  • The subject of a recent ‘no-expense-spared’ refurbishment
  • Designated a Category S insurance write-off in 2021
