The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 119

1978 Lancia Beta Montecarlo Spider S1
The subject of much recent expenditure

Registration - GJX 5S

Chassis No. - 137AS0003875

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 52,832

The decidedly eye-catching first series Montecarlo on offer is an eight-keeper example that was purchased by the vendor from a Mathewson’s auction in 2021, and briefly appeared on the ‘Bangers & Cash’: Restoring Classics’ TV programme. The Lancia was blue in colour at birth, but was the subject of a ‘very good’ window-out respray in Rosso Red in 1996, at which time the currently ‘immaculate’ windscreen was probably renewed. Since acquiring the Montecarlo the vendor has carried out a recommissioning programme that’s included an overhaul of the electrical system and refurbishment of the distinctive alloy wheels. He has also treated the car to a number of new items, including: alternator, carburettor overhaul kit, fuel filter and regulator, fuses and relays, spark plugs, oil pressure switch, brake hoses, gearlever linkage, roof straps and gasket, and steering column stalk switch. He now views the five-speed manual gearbox as ‘excellent’, the twin-cam engine, bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’, and the red-piped black cloth upholstery as ‘average’. He volunteers that an AA check confirms that ‘GJX 5S’ has never been crashed and that the indicated mileage of just 52,832 is genuine. He is now selling the sporty Lancia complete with new ‘double bubble’ roof and black dash surround, workshop manual, parts catalogue, pair of keys and a current MOT valid to November 2.

The pretty mid-engined Montecarlo was unveiled at the Geneva Salon in 1975. The first series cars, such as the example on offer, remained in production until 1978, were badged Lancia Beta Montecarlos, and powered by a 1995cc Lampredi inline four-cylinder twin-cam motor of 118bhp. The most noticeable differences between these and the Second series cars built from 1980 to 1982 were their 5.5Jx13 inch so called ‘bow tie’ alloy wheels and the rear buttresses, which were solid rather than open. Lancia claimed 9.3 seconds for the dash from 0-100kph and a terminal speed of 118mph. A total of 7,798 coupe and spider version of the Montecarlo were produced.

In summary
