The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 116

1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa
In current ownership for 16 years

Registration - G2 OPM

Chassis No. - WPOZZZ96ZLS410569

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 99,661

Though it was not Porsche that pioneered the idea of removable roof panels, the company’s so-called Targa system first seen on the 1966 model year 911 has become the generic term for tops of that type. The Targa now offered is a 1990 (964) example finished in grey and trimmed in grey-piped cream hide. It features the optional Tiptronic automatic transmission and has had a total of nine keepers to date, the most recent of whom has retained the Porsche for no less than 16 years. The accompanying large history file includes a bill from DP Motorsport of Runcorn, Cheshire for £9,805.42 to cover an engine rebuild that took place in 2007. The vendor presently considers the flat-six engine to still be in ‘excellent’ order, and the transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition. He is now selling the car complete with its original manuals, a service book containing a mix of main dealer and specialist stamps, and a collection of old MOTs, plus a current one valid to May 17 next year. The odometer currently registers 99,666 miles.

Penned by Benjamin Dimson, the 964 was manufactured between 1989 and 1994, when it was supplanted by the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993. Its more integrated bumpers and other styling updates gave the newcomer a fresh appearance, and it was considered by Porsche to be 85 percent new compared to the outgoing 3.2 model. It was also the first 911 to be equipped with coil rather than torsion bar suspension, and the first to be offered with Tiptronic automatic transmission, four-wheel drive, ABS brakes and power steering though, as before, there was the choice of coupe, Targa or cabriolet guises. The powerplant was a new

naturally-aspirated flat-six unit of 3.6-litre displacement, the output of which was 248bhp at 6,100rpm. Performance figures for examples equipped with the Tiptronic gearbox were 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 159mph. The total number of 964s produced was 63,762, of which 3,534 were Carrera 2 Targas.

In summary:

  • Equipped with the optional Tiptronic gearbox
  • Has remained within the same ownership for the last 16 years
  • Treated to an engine rebuild in 2007
