The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 111

1997 Mercedes-Benz SL 320
Complete with hard top

Registration - P847 JEC

Chassis No. - WDB1290632F151985

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 143,774

‘P847 JEC’ is accompanied by its original bill of sale, showing that the first of the car’s six keepers to date purchased it new from the well-known Mercedes dealer H L Gorner for the sum £53,950. Its Tourmaline Green bodywork is matched to cream leather upholstery and it rides on period-correct eight-spoke alloy wheels shod with Maxxis tyres. It is a car for all seasons, having both a hood and colour-keyed factory hard top. The vendor who has owned the car since February last year informs us that it ‘drives really well’ and he presently regards the straight-six engine, automatic transmission, two-door convertible bodywork, metallic paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘good’ condition. The SL is now being offered for sale complete with ‘huge’ history file and a current MOT valid to April 12 next year. The odometer currently registers 143,744 miles.

Mercedes have been producing an SL (Sport Leicht) model since 1954, when the landmark 300 SL was unveiled. The 190 followed in 1955, completing the first generation of cars. The fourth generation (R129 Series) was based on a shortened version of the W124 saloon floorpan and first saw the light of day at the 1989 Geneva Salon. Runner-up to the Citroën XM in the following year’s European Car of the Year Award, it was a beautifully-engineered car that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features, and has the distinction of being the first passenger vehicle to have its seat belts integrated into the seats themselves. The specification also included independent suspension all round (double wishbone at the front/five link system at the rear), adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, integral roll-over bar and front air bags. The model was replaced by the R230 in 2001 after 213,089 examples had been built.

In summary:

  • A six-keeper, 143,744-mile example
  • Is equipped with both hard and soft tops
  • Comes with original bill of sale and MOT valid into April next year
