The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 104

1997 Ford Fiesta Encore
**NO RESERVE** Only 15,000 miles from new

Registration - R64 EGX

Chassis No. - WFLBXXBAJBBR77181

M.O.T. - June 2024

Odometer - 15,296

Interest in secondhand Fiestas has inevitably risen sharply since Ford recently withdrew the ever-popular model from production, and could just rise to fever pitch over this delightful 1997 example that’s had just two owners and travelled a mere 15,248 miles from new. We understand the first keeper was a southern lady who, judging by the dealer sticker that remains in the rear window, purchased ‘R64 EGX’ new from Copers Cope Ford of Penge, South London. The most recent ‘car fanatic’ owner acquired the Encore in 2017, at which point the odometer evidently registered c.6,000 miles. Now offered for sale at No Reserve, the Ford is described by the vendor as a ‘completely original and unmolested example that drives like a new car and has an immaculate interior’. Finished in white and trimmed in blue-grey cloth it comes complete with spare wheel and jack. Documentation includes original service book with nine stamps, handbooks and a selection of old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid to June 1 next year.

Developed across no less than seven generations, Ford’s incredibly successful Fiesta was discontinued last month, much to the disappointment of its legion of fans. No less than 22 million examples were sold during the model’s astonishing 47-year reign, 4.8 million of which found homes in the UK, where it was the top selling car for 12 consecutive years (2009-2020) and the country’s best-selling one of all time. From frugal family runabout to winner of international rallies, Ford’s famous baby ticked countless boxes in its reign and leaves a very large automotive hole behind it. The Encore model we’re concerned with here was a budget specification version of the MKIV Fiesta that was sold from 1995 to 1999. Its ‘Kent-based’ 1.3-litre OHV Endura-E engine had an output of 59bhp that was sufficient to endow the hatchback with a 0-60mph time of 14.8 seconds, and top speed just shy of 100mph. And, thanks to a modest fuel consumption it could comfortably travel some 360 miles per tank of fuel – so much for electric cars!

In summary:

  • Just two keepers and 15,248 miles from new
  • A pleasingly original, unmolested example – said to ‘drive like new’
  • Being sold at ‘No Reserve’
