The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 103

1988 Opel Manta GT-E Exclusive
**NO RESERVE**

Registration - E146 VOK

Chassis No. - W0L000058J6066627

M.O.T. - Expired

Odometer - 51,789

‘E146 VOK’ has had just three keepers to date and, according to its odometer, has notched up a very modest total mileage of just 51,789. That’s at least partly due to the fact that its only recently been awoken from long term slumber, and so will require a degree of recommissioning before venturing back onto the public roads. We understand that it starts and drives and that the fuel system has been cleaned and a new pump installed. The interior is described as ‘complete and in generally good condition, with no rips or tears’. The body on the other hand ‘would benefit from repairs to the sills and the area around the spare wheel well, and, ideally, a complete respray’. In summary the vendor currently grades the engine, five-speed manual gearbox and upholstery as ‘good’, the white paintwork as ‘below average’, and the two-door coupe bodywork as ‘poor’. This eminently viable project is now being sold at No Reserve, complete with factory-fitted sunroof and Foxguard alarm. A rare opportunity.

Named after the manta ray fish, Opel’s Manta was a rearwheel drive sports coupe in the vein of Ford’s Capri, and produced in two generations between 1970 and 1988. The second incarnation, the Manta B, first saw the light of day in August 1975 and was fashioned around the Opel Ascona of the time. The GT/E version was the most sporting of the offerings, the ultimate off-the-shelf form of which was the so-called Exclusive model, that is readily identified externally by its Irmscher-inspired front and rear spoilers, side skirts, quad headlights and distinctive five-spoke alloy wheels, and internally by its red-piped cloth covered Recaro seats and Irmscher-badged leather-rimmed steering wheel. Power came from the company’s 2.0-litre CIH (cam in head) engine, which sported Bosch fuel injection and delivered some 110bhp. The Manta was immortalised by the rally versions successfully campaigned by Russell Brookes and Jimmy McCrae.

In summary:

  • Just three keepers and 51,789 miles from new
  • Recently awoken from long term slumber
  • Being sold at No Reserve
