The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 100

1987 Jaguar XJ-S Coupe 5.3
**NO RESERVE**

Registration - WAC 800X

Chassis No. - SAJJNAEW3BA139637

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 71,680

This very original-looking V12 XJ-S was first registered in April 1987 and has had a total of 10 owners to date, the most recent of whom acquired the Jaguar in 2022, prior to which it had apparently been dry-stored for a couple of years. Its Sandy Gold paintwork is complemented by a suitably luxurious level of polished wood veneer and beige leather interior trim, and the XJ rides on a tidy set of period-correct alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P4000 tyres. The vendor informs us that ‘WAC 800X’ drives well and has recently been treated to a new headlining, battery and set of spark plugs. He presently classes the 5.3-litre engine, automatic transmission and upholstery as ‘good’, and the coupe bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. He is now selling the Jaguar at No Reserve, complete with a current MOT valid to February 29 next year and a modest collection of paperwork.

Jaguar's XJ-S (later the XJS) was based on the XJ saloon and launched in September 1975 as a replacement for the legendary E-Type, though it was a cat of very different character – the E-type being a race-bred sports car while the XJS was more of a high speed GT machine. It was based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell equipped with all-round independent suspension (double wishbone front, lower wishbone/radius arm rear). At launch, the car was powered by Jaguar’s silky smooth 5,343cc V-12 engine mated to either Borg Warner Model 12 automatic or manual transmission. The latter was soon dropped as an option and in 1979 the Borg Warner unit was superseded by GM’s three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic box. The HE version of the model introduced in 1981 brought an increase in power and reduction in fuel consumption. Though relatively heavy, the XJ-S was no mean performer and would hit 60mph in around 7.8 seconds and top 140mph flat out.

In summary:

  • A tidy example of an increasingly sought-after model
  • Recently treated to new headlining, battery and spark plugs
  • Being sold at No Reserve
