1968 Leyland Mini Moke
Little is known about this smartly-presented righthand drive Moke, which has recently been imported from South Africa and comes complete with the NOVA paperwork required to achieve a UK registration. It has self-evidently been the subject of a restoration and is said by the vendor to ‘drive very well’. Its all grey bodywork is complemented by black-painted steel wheels. Power is supplied by an Austin-badged 1275cc version of the ubiquitous A Series engine, so it seems reasonable to assume the performance will be suitably lively. Creature comforts are understandably limited, but do include a pair of all-embracing bucket seats and a leather-rimmed steering wheel. We understand the Moke will also be equipped with a new MOT certificate by the time of the sale.
The utilitarian Moke (slang for Donkey) was conceived as a light military vehicle and, codenamed The Buckboard, was tested by all three members of the armed forces. However, its relatively low ground clearance ruled it out of most combat situations, and its forte has been as a beach buggy in such popular holiday destinations as the Seychelles and the Caribbean. Some 50,000 examples were manufactured all told – UK production ran from 1964 to 1968, while they were also built in Australia and Portugal. The monocoque shell comprised a pair of box-section pontoons connected by the floorpan and firewall. Engine, gearbox, suspension etc were standard Mini components, making for economical service and repair.
