Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 72

1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Chassis No. - 124379N525427

Registration - UBD 246G

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 78,000

Here’s one to raise the pulse – a fully restored Camaro SS of similar vintage to Steve McQueen’s immortal Mustang, and arguably at least as exciting. The refurbishment evidently involved taking the shell back to bare metal before sandblasting it and then fitting new front floor panels. With the repairs complete, the Chevy was resprayed in a pleasing shade of metallic blue and finished off with white stripes front and rear. The suspension and brake systems were treated to a refresh, and the interior rejuvenated with new seat covers, roof lining and carpet. This lefthand drive muscle car rides on five-spoke alloy wheels shod with meaty BFGoodrich tyres – new up front and 70 percent worn on the rear. The engine is not the car’s original 5.0-litre unit, but a visually stunning big block 7.2-litre one, and there can be little doubt that the sound emanating from the man-size twin tailpipes will be one to behold. The massive motor drives through a three-speed automatic transmission. ‘UBD 246G’ has apparently covered 78,000 miles to date, but following its high standard rebuild would seem set drive the same again and more.

Concerned at the runaway success of Ford’s pony car, the ubiquitous Mustang, General Motors brought the first generation Camaro to market in the September of 1966. It was based on a new rear-wheel drive platform and shared both that and a variety of other major components with the Pontiac Firebird. The 2+2 was available as a two-door coupe or convertible and came with a choice of no less than six powerplants, from a 4.1-litre straight six to a 6.5-litre V8, and three trim and tuning packages – RS, SS and Z28.

In summary:

  • The subject of a high standard restoration
  • Resplendent in white-striped metallic blue
  • Nowadays powered by a big block 7.2-litre V8
