Some cars go in and out of fashion, but Caterhams are an automotive staple for which strong demand has remained since 1973 – the year the model morphed seamlessly from the Series 3 Lotus Seven. ‘P991 SJD’ is an attractive example of the Super Sport 135 version whose body is finished in Azure Blue Metallic, that’s complemented by black leather interior trim and silver painted alloy wheels. It has had just four owners to date and covered a mere 26,121 miles. Its 135bhp K-Series engine drives through a five-speed manual gearbox to the desirable De Dion rear end. The car’s lengthy list of equipment includes: baffled engine sump; side exit exhaust; full weather equipment; tonneau cover; heated windscreen; later type MSA-approved rollover bar; pair of four-point harnesses; and Momo leather-covered steering wheel. This pocket rocket is now being offered for somebody else to enjoy, complete with: comprehensive ownership and service history; photographic record of the build that was carried out by Chas Berger Motorsport, plus the invoice to the first owner; copies of the various V5 registration documents; selection of parts and service bills; owner’s manual; two sets of keys and alarm fobs; old MOT certificates dating back to February 2000, plus a current one valid into April 2022.
Automotive genius though he was, one imagines that the late Colin Chapman would be rather surprised that a direct development of the car he launched at the 1957 Earls Court Motor Show was still being built, bought, raced and enjoyed the world over. While few if any of the components are interchangeable between the Lotus and today’s Caterhams, the concept and general configuration remain unaltered.
