1951 Sunbeam-Talbot 90 Drophead Coupe
From the collection of entrepreneur/author Laurie Seago-Taylor

Odometer – 5,000

Laurie’s purchase of this truly gorgeous Sunbeam was sparked by fond memories of one once owned by his father. However, considering it had been gently rotting for 48 years in the first owner’s garden, its rejuvenation was always going to be a labour of love and the transformation is nothing short of spectacular. Following its acquisition, the car was completely dismantled and both body and chassis sandblasted. The shell was then placed on a rotisserie and any areas beyond repair replaced with genuine Sunbeam parts from a donor vehicle – any filling required was lead-loaded just as it would have been in period. Once repaired, the metalwork was sandblasted again before being sprayed with molten zinc at 400 deg.C, and then in the chosen colour of white. The underside was finished with two coats of Hammerite to match the now immaculate body. Having been lined with Dynamat, the interior was fully trimmed in Red leather specially tanned in Austria, while the red hood was handcrafted in mohair.

All the mechanical parts were either refurbished or renewed. The original MKII Talbot engine was completely overhauled and brought up to MKIIA specification, which included porting the head and balancing the crankshaft and flywheel. Other upgrades include electronic ignition, an alternator in place of the original dynamo, a higher differential ratio of 3.9:1 for more relaxed cruising, a larger Alpine-type radiator, stainless steel exhaust system, and switch from positive to negative earth. Now fully sorted and ready to delight a new keeper, ‘LHP 270’ has completed just 5,000 miles since returning to the road.

In summary:

  • A total no expense spared restoration in which virtually everything was overhauled or renewed
  • Numerous desirable upgrades to the mechanicals
  • Just 5,000 miles covered since the restoration
