Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 55

1960 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL

Chassis No. - 121040109500398

Registration - XFF 207

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 34,059

‘XFF 207’ remained the property of its previous keeper for 20 years and currently displays an unwarranted but credible 34,059 kilometres. A handsome lefthand drive example of a rare and increasingly sought-after model, the Mercedes was imported from the USA and first UK registered in October 1994. It was apparently restored during the 1990s, work that the vendor informs us has ‘stood up very well, the car being free of blemishes and corrosion’. The roadster’s once grey bodywork is nowadays finished in a very attractive shade of metallic blue, that’s complemented by medium blue upholstery and dark blue carpets. The relatively recently installed mohair hood is also a pleasing shade of blue. The overall effect is heightened by gleaming brightwork, and this classy two-seater is now being offered complete with twin Weber carburettor engine conversion, period stereo system and hood cover. Ready to enjoy, this lovely SL would surely make a worthy addition to any classic collection.

The 190 SL was introduced in 1955 – the year Mercedes dominated the Mille Miglia with the 300 SLR. Indeed, the graceful new two-door convertible grand tourer was sold alongside the road-going version of the SLR – the 300SL - whose styling it strongly resembled. The underpinnings of the two cars were, however, quite different and, while the 300 SL had a purpose-built tubular spaceframe (W198), its smaller sibling utilised a shortened version of the ‘Ponton’ saloon (W121) platform, which was of monocoque construction. The 190 SL also boasted an all-new engine - an over-square SOHC straight-four unit of 1,897cc that produced 120bhp, which was sufficient to propel the car to a maximum speed of 112mph. Some 25,000 190 SLs were built all told.

In summary:

  • Notably low indicated mileage
  • The subject of an enduring older restoration
  • Twin Weber engine conversion
