1977 Mercedes 280E
RESERVE MET South African Import

Registration – TBC

Chassis No. – TBC

M.O.T. – TBC

Odometer – 184,237

This commanding looking W123 Mercedes-Benz 280E was imported from South Africa last year. As such it has seemingly benefitted from the drier, milder climate and salt-free road network. The W123 has yet to be registered in the UK, Once registered her it will be classified as an Historic Vehicle based on age and so MOT exempt and zero rated for road tax. Showing 184,251 kms, around 114,500 miles, this W123’s condition is rated as good overall by the vendor and comes complete with spare wheel, jack, tools, two keys and ample paperwork.

The W123 soon earned a reputation for its robust engineering and long-lived mechanicals. Beloved of German taxi companies of the period, many would cover 500,000 to 1,000,000 kilometres on their original running gear. This example seems to exhibit those same qualities plus benefitting from a much lower mileage. Presented in Light Ivory external livery the signature painted and chromed original wheel trims are present (and photographed) but not currently fitted. The commodious cabin is trimmed in Moss Green perforated MB-Tex material, which is a charming mix of green and brown. The upholstery condition appears very good for its age with just some cracking noted to the top of the rear seat back. The big VDO dials and large four spoke black steering wheel are instantly recognisable Mercedes attributes. An original Becker Monza radio cassette is fitted underscoring the admirable originality of this W123.

The 280E featured the most powerful engine of the W123 range with the “E” designating this as a fuel injected model. The M110 E28 engine is a straight six petrol unit which was originally rated at 175 bhp and delivering 173 Ib-ft of torque. In this example it is paired with a four speed automatic transmission originally gifting the 280E a 120mph plus top speed and a sub 10 second 0-60 mph time.

In summary:

  • A rare example of the most powerful W123 280 E saloon
  • Presented in a highly original condition with an excellent period livery
  • No NOVA certificate supplied
