Over 50 years on from a famously disappointing launch, the MGB’s six-cylinder brother is an increasingly appreciated model, good examples of which are keenly sought by collectors. ‘TUC 650F’ is an automatic transmission example that has remained within the same ownership for no less than 35 years, prior to which it was the property of a classic car collector who had the bodywork restored and repainted in British Racing Green. The vendor informs us that the MG has been garaged throughout his tenure and treated to frequent use on suitably sunny days. He reports that the engine ‘starts and runs well and has proved reliable’ – eg he has undertaken a number of long trip from Manchester to Scotland and London without any problems, and describes the C as a ‘good cruising car’. He presently classes all major aspects of it as ‘excellent’, with the exception of the interior which he volunteers would now benefit from new carpets and door cards. On the other hand, the white-piped black leather seats that were replaced at the time of the restoration apparently remain in good condition. The odometer currently registers an unwarranted but totally credible 91,845 miles from new, and the MG is now seeking a suitably caring new home. It comes complete with painted wire wheels, sunroof, rear mud flaps, radio/cassette player and a collection of old invoices.
Based around the same two-door monocoque bodyshell as the humble MGB, the MGC was powered by a 2,912cc OHV straight-six engine. Other differences included torsion-bar independent front suspension, telescopic dampers, lower geared rack and pinion steering, bonnet 'power bulge' and 15-inch wheels. GT production totalled just 4,458 examples.
