Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 107

1971 Ford Escort MK 1

Chassis No. - CSAFPP29985224440

Registration - CY16 4858

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 22,771

Good MK1 Escorts have escalated in value in recent years and rust free examples are eagerly sought by the fast Ford brigade. This one masquerading as a Mexico apparently started life in Johannesburg, South Africa, returning to these shores as recently as 2018. Finished in red and trimmed in black, it is said by the vendor to have a sound bodyshell, but one that would benefit from a respray due to sun damage. He feels it could serve as ‘an excellent Mexico replica’, owing to the fact that it apparently has factory strengthened inner wings. Under the bonnet sits a Mexico-like 1600cc Crossflow engine featuring a finned alloy rocker cover and pancake air filter. Other features of note are the Escort’s gold-coloured Minilite-style alloy wheels, pair of auxiliary lights, leather rimmed steering wheel, modified pedals and period radio. Its odometer displays an unwarranted 22,771 miles.

Ford’s phenomenally successful Escort made its debut at the 1968 Brussels Motorshow. It was a direct replacement for the long running Anglia range and, while much of the mechanicals were carried over, the styling was far more contemporary; the key elements of which were the Detroit-inspired ‘Coke bottle’ waistline (later echoed by the MKIII Cortina) and the distinctive ‘dogbone’ shaped radiator grille. Power came from a choice of Crossflow OHV ‘Kent’ engines, which drove through a slick four-speed manual gearbox or three-speed automatic unit and on to the rear wheels. Suspension was by MacPherson struts at the front and live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear, while the Escort was the first Ford to feature rack and pinion steering.

In summary

  • Said to be ‘a good runner with sound bodyshell’
  • Factory strengthened inner wings and 1600cc Crossflow engine
  • Minilite-style alloy wheels
