Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 92

1997 Ford Escort Calypso Cabriolet

Chassis No - WF0LXXGKALTE92959

Registation - P321 XDW

M.O.T. - October 2021

Odometer - 109,103

This home market Ford Escort cabriolet matches metallic purple bodywork to grey cloth upholstery. The vendor informs us that the car ‘is really straight and the interior in very good condition’, and adds that ‘it drives really nicely and everything works, including the black electrically operated roof’. Its standard 1.6-litre Zetec petrol engine drives through a manual five speed gearbox and the Escort rides on attractive five-spoke alloy wheels. It is now being offered complete with a later Ford CD player, its original document pack and lots of receipts for work carried out, plus a current MOT valid to October 29 this year. The car’s total recorded mileage presently stands at 109,103. Summer motoring doesn’t come much more affordable than this.

The Calypso was a limited edition cabriolet version of Ford’s sixth generation Ford Escort, all open-topped examples of which were manufactured by Karmann in Germany. Its front-mounted Zetec engine was rated at 89bhp, which was good enough to power the convertible to 60mph in under 12 seconds and on to a top speed of over 106mph. Production of the Calypso ran from March 1996 to April 1998.

In summary:

  • A clean-looking example of Ford’s popular rag top
  • Fully working electrically-operated hood
  • Equipped with later specification Ford CD player
