Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 54

1953 MG TD

Chassis No. - TF27577

Registration - MUF 980

M.O.T. - June 2021

Odometer – 17,546

Manufactured during the last few months of TD production, ‘MUF 980’ is a very tidy, useable example with an impressive history. It was apparently the property of respected MG restorer George Rome for the 30 years from 1972 to 2002, during which time it was comprehensively refurbished and treated to a higher axle ratio for more relaxed cruising. The MG then had a further four keepers before being acquired by the vendor in June 2008. He tells us that in his care ‘the car has had whatever it has needed and more’. This has included: having the carburettors refurbished by Tony Hebdon and the distributor rebuilt by Distributor Doctor; the front suspension sand blasted, powder coated and fitted with Polybushes; the seats replaced with top quality equivalents; and the rear end upgraded by the fitment of a Moss Europe telescopic damper kit, which the vendor says has ‘transformed the roadholding’. Still sporting its original body and metalwork, the TD is resplendent in red paintwork that’s teamed with red interior trim and tan weather equipment, while the painted steel wheels are shod with matching Vredestein tyres. Now available for a new keeper to enjoy, this clearly well sorted period MG comes complete with chrome luggage rack, badge bar with matching Lucas spot and fog lamps, exterior rear view mirror and an MOT valid until June 23. A fine opportunity for TD enthusiasts everywhere.

Launched in 1950, the TD was underpinned by the chassis of MG’s Y-Type saloon. Some 30,000 examples had been produced by the time the model was superseded by the TF in October 1953, no less than 23,500 of which were exported to the USA.

In summary:

  • A very well presented and thoroughly sorted example
  • Impressive, fully documented history from 1972 onwards
  • Complete with a number of desirable upgrades
