Lot 49

1926 Bullnose Morris Oxford

Chassis No. - 139094

Registration - RP 2573

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 6,792

This charming and apparently very original Bullnose was first registered in April 1926. Its distinctive yellow and black bodywork is teamed with brown leather upholstery and carpets, and the venerable Morris comes complete with hood, side screens, Auster screen, tonneau and storage cover. According to the vendor, the car remained within the same family ownership from new until his acquisition in 2001. It has subsequently resided in a heated garage and clearly benefited from regular servicing and maintenance. This has included: an overhaul of the engine, gearbox and braking system; coil conversion; re-cored radiator; the replacement of the clutch and, most recently, the battery.

An eminently usable vintage car, ‘RP 2573’ is said to be all but watertight with the hood up and sidescreens in place. Its specification includes a genuine period Wilmot Breeden Calometer, running-board mounted fuel can and toolbox, and klaxon. Entry to the world of vintage motoring doesn’t come in much more affordable packages than this, which includes a selection of historical documents and service history.

By 1902 William Morris had progressed from creating bicycles to motorcycles and by 1913 was building a car for the masses, the £175 Bullnose Morris Oxford – the name reflected the car’s city of manufacture. For 1923 its four-cylinder engine was enlarged from 1548cc to 1802cc, while two years later the model gained a longer wheelbase and four-wheel brakes. When production ceased in 1926, the Oxford and its variants accounted for a staggering 45 percent of all new UK cars sales, and no less than 168,000 examples were made. The Bullnose nickname is a contraction of bullet nose – the original description for the car’s distinctive round-topped radiator.

In summary:

  • A well-presented and well-maintained example
  • Single family ownership for the first 75 years
  • Comes complete with historical documents and service history
