Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 40

1936 Ford Model Y (Long Rad)

Chassis No. - Y167414RY1462741PC

Registration - YXS 847

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 20,037

The only four-seat saloon ever to sell for as little as £100, Ford’s immortal Model Y is much-loved to this day and the c.1,250 that remain are highly prized. The example offered that’s self-evidently been restored to pristine condition throughout was manufactured at Dagenham in 1936 and then assembled in Cork from a CKD kit the following year. Its first owner was apparently a doctor who used it for his pre-war rounds in Southern Ireland – the original Irish registration plate is included in the lot. The current 933cc engine is a reconditioned unit, though the original one was still running when removed from the car and forms part of the sale. The vendor informs us that the faithful Ford’s history includes some IRA-instigated damage and believes the notably low recorded mileage of just 20,037 (c.235 per annum!) is genuine, as the vehicle was stored in both Eire and Belfast for some years. He says that there is ‘very little wear in the running gear and bearings etc, and that the rod brakes and related linkages are in exceptional condition’. ‘YXS 847’ has recently benefited from a new battery, tyres and inner tubes. The handy rear luggage box was installed during the restoration, but the luggage rack and dealer sticker are original items. The Ford comes complete with a few spare parts – eg new fuel sender unit – and the benefit of an LED indicator system, though the vendor volunteers there is room for improvement with this 6-volt set-up. Model Ys surely don’t come much better than this one, which is resplendent in brown over black paintwork that’s complemented by a tan leather interior.

In summary:

  • Believed to have covered just 20,037 miles from new
  • Comprehensively restored
  • Comes complete with various spares, including the original engine
