Lot 36

1963 Mercury Monterey Breezeway

Chassis No. - 3Z51Y530534

Registration - ATL 250A

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer – 95,727

This rare lefthand drive Breezeway is the epitome of 1960s Americana, complete with extravagantly winged tail, enormous boot and acres of chrome trim. However, the even more stand-out feature of all such non-convertible Breezeways is their retractable reverse-slant rear window, which apparently works perfectly on this eye-catching example.

Finished in gold, trimmed in black and white vinyl and riding on black-painted steel wheels, ‘ATL 250A’ was imported into the UK in the Autumn of 2014. It is powered by the 6.4-litre (390ci) version of Ford’s legendary FE V8 engine and drives through a three-speed automatic transmission. The vendor informs us that the Mercury has recently benefited from a considerable level of refurbishment. New items include: Edelbrock inlet manifold and carburettor; stainless brake and fuel lines; dual life stainless steel exhaust system; PerTronix electronic ignition system; front springs and lower wishbone bushes; heavy duty battery and leads; oil and filter. The brake calipers and vented/grooved discs up front are said to be as new, while the radiator has been re-cored, the tracking re-set and the car lowered by around two inches all round. According to the vendor ‘the engine is absolutely beautiful – ie silent, smoke and rattle free, and displaying good oil pressure. The transmission is also perfect and the car goes like the clappers’! Though everything including the radio apparently works, there are evidently a few things that could still benefit from attention: eg the door and window seals, and the ignition barrel that’s also a little worn (replacements for all of which are included in the sale) and the vinyl upholstery that’s now a touch threadbare in places.

In summary:

  • A rare and highly distinctive item of ‘60s Americana
  • An apparently well-sorted example with lots of new parts
  • 6.4-litres of American muscle
