Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

Lot 35

1989 BMW 525i SE
12 Months M.O.T.

Chassis No. - WBAHC22000BE12913

Registration - F289 RAR

M.O.T. - April 2022

Odometer – 93,500

The BMW 5 Series has long since been the mid-sized saloon by which all others are judged, and this time warp 1989 525i SE is testament to the model’s renowned build quality. It has had just two owners from new, who between them have covered a mere 93,500 miles – ie little more than 3,000 per annum. The first keeper retained the BMW for some 26 years, while the second London-based one is only parting with the car due to the extension of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone. She has apparently experienced no fundamental issues during her six-year tenure, and informs us that it ‘drives beautifully, and is as smooth as it always was’. A new gear-lever was evidently fitted to the four-speed ZF automatic gearbox in 2018, and now the car’s only known mechanical fault concerns some minor issues with the circulation of air to the front and rear windows. Aside of a tiny dent and scuff at the front end of the BMW, its light metallic blue bodywork seems remarkable for its age, while the vendor classes the pale grey velour interior trim as being ‘in very good nick’, and notes that the ashtray has ‘remained unused for the car’s entire 31 years’.

‘F289 RAR’ rides on tidy, period-correct BMW alloy wheels and comes complete with factory-fitted sunroof, full service history and a current MOT. Launched in January 1988, BMW’s E34 model was the third generation of the 5 Series, that over its nine years of production featured the equivalent number of engine line-ups from straight-fours to V8s. Popular among them, was the silky smooth 168bhp straight-six M20 unit as featured in the sale car.

In summary:

  • Just two owners and 93,500 miles from new
  • Time warp condition inside and out
  • Full service history
