1989 Rover Montego 1.6 SL
*** No Reserve ***

Registration - F135 AFV

M.O.T - March 2022

Odometer – 25,000

From the collection of entrepreneur/author Laurie Seago-Taylor

When did you last see a Montego, or certainly one in such amazingly original condition as ‘F135 AFV’? Not for a very long time we’ll wager. The story gets better, as it’s a genuine two-owner example that’s covered just 25,000 miles from new, 10,000 of which were accrued over the last 14 years. First registered in April 1989 it was acquired by Laurie from the first owner back in 2005 as a replacement for his existing 2.0-litre version. However, against expectations, that car is still going strong today, hence the trusty 1.6’s return to market after all these years. Its very tidy metallic bronze-coloured bodywork is teamed with an equally shipshape fawn cloth interior, and the specification includes a glass tilt and slide sunroof. The car’s 86bhp 1.6-litre S Series engine drives through a four-speed manual gearbox. Having always been garaged, the Rover is understood to be in ‘excellent condition throughout’ and requiring only a little TLC to keep it on the road for many more years to come. This venerable modern classic car was treated to a new battery a year ago, and only required a steering rack gaiter and some adjustment to the parking brake to see it through the last MOT. Rare and eminently usable, the mighty Montego is offered at no reserve. Classic motoring doesn’t come much cheaper than this.

Designed to compete with the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier, the Montego range carried Austin badges from 1984 to 1988 and Rover ones from 1988 until the cessation of production in 1995, by which time 436,000 had found homes in the UK.

Summary:

  • A totally original two-owner example that’s covered just 25,000 from new
  • Remarkable condition for its age
  • A rare and totally usable modern-day classic
